When you force yourself to stay awake longer than you want to, it doesn’t feel good. In fact, if you keep on doing it, night after night, you start to feel it throughout your whole body. This why pushing anyone – you or your little one – beyond their tiredness isn’t helpful. Instead, you need to learn about the tired signs.

Some common early tired signs in newborns are burying their head into your shoulder, yawning, arching their back, and frowning. Older babies and children might show different tired signs – like becoming clingy and hyperactive or having meltdowns. Your little one is unique, so they may show some of these signs and some different ones too.

During my discussions with parents, I often hear them say their little one is a “high-needs (HN)” baby. They've been told or read that the sleep and routine challanges they are experiencing are simply due to the "high needs" temperament of their baby and there's not a lot they can do to change that.

Interestingly, I was told by our paediatrician that our middle boy, Harry, was a "high-needs" baby at the ripe old age of 12 weeks.

He was (and is not) a "high-needs" baby... he was simply exhausted.

If night-time for you and your older baby, toddler, child, tween or teen looks like being up and playing, cuddling, watching TV, moving around, and having snacks or even meals, your bodies aren’t getting the chance to work in the healthy way they were designed to, and your child needs your help to resolve this.

When your little one is waking frequently at night-time and unable to go back to sleep, there’s always a reason.

Sometimes it’s related to their basic needs, like if they’re hungry because they haven’t had enough calories during the day, or if they’re exhausted and in “overdrive” because they haven’t been getting enough total sleep recently.

And sometimes it’s related to HOW they fall asleep each time they go to bed, and whether or not those conditions are still the same when they rouse naturally during the night.
