Sometimes the most beautiful part of my work has nothing to do with sleep 🤍

A few months ago, I walked through @danreilly_official and @dani_wales front door as their sleep consultant. Two exhausted parents needing some support with their beautiful little boy, Fletch.

I moved in for three nights, and together we started finding our feet.

What I didn’t know then was that I wasn’t just meeting another family I would have the privilege of helping.

I was making new friends.

Fast forward to Friday, and there I was again. Only this time, I brought my beautiful Poppy along, and together we spent time looking after little Fletch so Dan and Dani could go to their fundraising event for beautiful Billie.

And my heart was so full.

Because this is the part of my work I absolutely adore.

The relationships. The trust. The conversations. The laughs. The beautiful connections that continue long after that first home visit.

Sometimes I’m there to help with sleep. Sometimes I’m there to listen. And sometimes I’m simply another pair of hands.

And somewhere along the way, the professional relationship becomes something much more personal.

I’ve always said @sleepbysteph is about so much more than helping babies sleep.

It’s about families. Motherhood. Community. Showing up for one another.

Dan and Dani, I’m so grateful our paths crossed. And seeing Poppy share in something that means so much to me made yesterday even more special.

This is why I love what I do.

Sometimes you walk into a family’s home to help them find rest, and leave having found something beautiful yourself 🤍

ROLLING, ROLLING, ROLLING… AND NOBODY IS SLEEPING!

“Hi Steph!

A little update from me, I am pleased to report that the most recent tweaks have sorted out the remaining sleep troubles.

After our chat I actually realised I hadn’t been putting them in a long sleeve singlet only a short one so we put them back in long sleeve and onesie and that sorted it all out.

They have been sleeping so soundly, little stirs here and there but settling back to sleep themselves and one feed overnight.

I am so relieved and really happy that we persisted with the process. I no longer feel anxious about their sleep or naps, I understand them and feel I have regained my confidence.

Thank you thank you thank you for your support, guidance and reassurance.

I completely understand your philosophy, things make sense now”.

“I get angry at you because you’re my person.” On

“I get angry at you because you’re my person.”

One of my kids said this to me last week. And I don’t think I’ll ever forget it.

Because being someone’s “person” isn’t always the beautiful stuff we imagine.

Sometimes it means you get the tears. The slammed doors. The frustration. The anger. The big emotions they’ve held together all day… until they get home.

And as a mum, that can be really bloody hard.

There have been moments I’ve wondered…
Why me?
Why do I get this version of you?
Am I doing something wrong?

And then came those words: “Because you’re my person.”

For me, that changed everything. Not because anger or hurtful behaviour suddenly becomes okay. It doesn’t. But it helped me see what can sometimes sit underneath the behaviour.

You know me.
You trust me.
You can fall apart with me.
And somewhere inside you, you believe I’ll still be here when it’s over.

What an enormous privilege that is. A hard one sometimes. An exhausting one. Occasionally a heartbreaking one. But a privilege nonetheless.

So to the mum who feels like everyone else gets the delightful version of her child while she gets the meltdowns, tears and anger… maybe you’re not getting everything wrong.

Sometimes, you may simply be the person your child feels safest falling apart with.

And after all the questioning I’ve done of myself as a mother, hearing my child say that to me felt like one of the greatest reassurances I could ever receive.

And I’ll take that over anything… every single time ❤️
